The Story of the Great King and the Four Gods (2008)

A long time ago, a tribe that respected the tiger and controlled fire called the Ho-jok (Tiger Tribe), ruled the world. They eliminated and assimilated all tribes except the tribe that respected the bear, called the Ung-jok (Bear Tribe). The Tiger Tribe and the Bear Tribe fought, and Hwang-woong could not bear to see so many people getting killed. He brought the three gods of nature; Poong-Baek (백호, the White Tiger), Woonsa (청룡, the Azure Dragon), and Woosa (현무, the Black Tortoise).

He removed the power of fire from the leader of the Tiger Tribe, Kajin, sealed the power into an artifact called the Heart of Jujak (주작, the Vermillion Bird), and gave it to the woman he loved; Sae-oh. However, Kajin was mortally wounded while attacking another tribe, and she seemed to die until Hwang-woong healed her. This thoroughly convinced Kajin to not make a grudge against Hwang-woong. When her tribe was revived to take back the power of fire, they didn’t listen to Gajin and decided to attack the Bear Tribe. Gajin then slew her tribe’s council with her own blade, and escapes from her own tribe and heads towards the Bear Tribe, deciding to become Hwahg-woong’s woman.

However, Hwang-woong likes Sae-oh and declared his love for her, not knowing that Kajin was watching them secretly when this took place. Kajin was infuriated by this and began reforming the Tiger Tribe and attacked the Bear Tribe. Unfortunately, this was the time when Sae-oh was pregnant, and when she had given birth, the baby was kidnapped by Kajin who offered Sae-oh a deal to trade her baby for the power of fire. When Sae-oh refuses Kajin, Kajin responds by dropping Sae-oh’s baby from a cliff, leading to Sae-oh going out of control and releasing the Heuk-Jujak (Black Phoenix), even though Hwang-woong had saved the baby. (Note: Jujak is roughly the equivalent of Phoenix.) Hwang-woong’s subordinates, the White Tiger, the Azure Dragon and the Black Tortoise fought the Black Phoenix, but they were no match for it.

Left with no choice, Hwang-woong used his Heavenly Bow to kill Sae-oh, the source of the power of the Black Phoenix, and managed to seal it once again in the heart of the Vermillion Bird. Kajin committed suicide by jumping from the cliff because she now “had no reason to live in this world any more.” Hwang-woong sealed the powers of the ‘Four Gods’ (The Vermillion Bird, White Tiger, Azure Dragon, and the Black Tortoise) in certain artifacts and left them in the care of certain people, telling them that they will wake when the King of Jushin is born.

Many centuries later, Damdeok, the reincarnation of Hwang-woong, was born. Along with him, the artifacts of the guardians of the King were born. Damdeok met difficulties in becoming the king of Goguryeo, mainly because of Yeon Hogae who mistook Damdeok for the murderer of his mother, and his father who turned the king’s parliament against him.

Charlie Chaplin – City Lights (1931)

Subtitled “A Comedy Romance in Pantomime,” is generally viewed as Charlie Chaplin’s greatest film – a “silent film” released three years after the start of the talkies era of sound. The melodramatic film, a combination of pathos, slapstick and comedy, was a tribute to the art of body language and pantomime – a lone hold-out against the assault of the talking film.

It was well known that Chaplin preferred the silent art form to the advent of sound films. Chaplin was responsible for the film’s production, direction, editing, music, and screenplay (although assisted by Harry Crocker, Henry Bergman, and Albert Austin). The episodic film includes a complete musical soundtrack and various sound effects – but no speech or dialogue. Incredibly, Chaplin’s film was not nominated for a single Academy Award – to the pro-talking film Academy members, it must have appeared to be reversing the trend toward talkies and advanced sound films.

The tale of blind love again presents the famous Little Tramp character – an outcast, homeless man with his baggy pants, tight coat, cane, large shoes and small hat who first appeared in 1914 (and gave his final appearance in Modern Times (1936)). This ’silent’ film is the quintessential Chaplin film – with superb examples of Chaplin’s (the Tramp’s) acting and artistic genius.

The film’s theme concerns the consequences (and suffering) resulting from the Tramp’s attachment and efforts to aid a blind girl (and restore her sight with money for an operation) and a millionaire, as he persuades both of them that life is worth living. Both characters cannot “see” him or recognize him for what he is. However, the Tramp functions as a savior and wish-fulfiller for the blind flower girl while masquerading as a wealthy duke. For the drunk millionaire, the Tramp repeatedly saves the man’s life and provides a congenial friend. [Note: Baby-faced comic Harry Langdon's best feature film in a short four-year film career, that was also director Frank Capra's feature-film debut, was The Strong Man (1926) - it predated Chaplin's City Lights (1931) by several years with its plot of a meek man in love with a blind woman.]

Charlie Chaplin – The Kid (1921)

Chaplin had difficulties getting The Kid produced. His inspiration, it is suggested was the death of his own first son, Norman Spencer Chaplin a few days after birth in 1919. His determination to make a serio-comic feature was challenged by First National who preferred two reel films, which were more quickly produced and released. Chaplin wisely gained his distributors’ approval by inviting them to the studio, where he trotted out the delightful Coogan to entertain them. Chaplin’s divorce case from his first wife Mildred Harris also played a part; fearing seizure of the negatives Chaplin and crew escaped to Salt Lake City and later to New York to complete the editing of the film. Chaplin’s excellent and moving score for The Kid was composed in 1971 for a theatrical re-release, but used themes that Chaplin had composed in 1921. Chaplin re-edited the film somewhat for the re-release, cutting scenes that he felt were overly sentimental, such as Purviance’s observing of a May-December wedding and her portrayal as a saint, outlined by a church’s stained glass window.
